If you want to escape from the hectic San Francisco Bay Area city life and save money on housing, without leaving civilization, look into Martinez. Martinez is Contra Costa’s county seat, which means you have beautiful old architecture, art galleries, coffee shops, and a quick commute when you have to serve jury duty.

Despite its position as the county seat, Martinez is a small town. It has only about 35,000 residents. It’s located about an hour from San Francisco, and about an hour and a half from many cities in Silicon Valley. It’s minutes from Concord and Berkeley, and a quick commute to Berkeley or Oakland. Residents can commute via BART or the ferry service.

Many Martinez residents barely commute at all. Almost 10,000 people work for the county, and it’s home to a Shell Oil refinery. Despite that, the city retains an old-timey charm. One of the Bay Area’s most famous historical figures, writer and environmentalist, John Muir. In fact, Martinez is surrounded by pristine nature preserves and parks.
