OUR HAPPY CUSTOMERS
We’ve Helped Thousands Of People Move

If there’s one city in the Bay Area you could call “centrally located,” it’s Hayward. Hayward is at the near intersection of three major freeways: 880, 580 and 238. It’s an easy drive to Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Oakland. It’s the perfect place to move for couples who commute in opposite directions.

Hayward had a rather inauspicious start more than 150 years ago. It was named for William Dutton Hayward, who was nothing more than a squatter on a quest for gold. Hayward lived uninvited on a piece of land owned by Guillermo Castro. When Castro learned Hayward was living on his land, he asked him to leave. Hayward did leave, but he also asked if he could buy part of the land. Castro sold him what is now Mission Blvd. on the north side of A Street. Hayward built a luxury hotel on the spot, but it burned down in 1916.

Hayward History

It took a while to settle on the name Hayward. Before settling on its current spelling, the city was called “Hayward’s,” Haywood” and “Haywards.” There is also some disagreement on precisely which Hayward was the city’s namesake. Most historians believe it was William Dutton Hayward, but the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System says the city was named after Alvinza Hayward, who made millions during the California Gold Rush.

During the first half of the 20th Century, Hayward was best known for tomatoes. It was home to the Hunt Brothers Cannery, which canned cherries, peaches, apricots, and of course, tomatoes.

Hayward is home to several manufacturing companies, including Annabelle Candy, Columbus Salame, the Gillig bus company, Impax Laboratories, Shasta soda company and a Pepsi processing plant. Hayward is also a college town; California State University East Bay is in Hayward.
